HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND PARENTS!!
I hope everyone had a restful and an enjoyable break. It was fabulous to see all your beautiful children this week. I know everyone is eager to get going onto the second half of our journey through fourth grade!!
We are pleased to welcome Ms. Katie Scapin to our classroom this semester. Ms. Scapin is a fourth year ECE student from KSU who will be student teaching with us this term. Please download and read her letter.
Report Cards went home today. Parents this is a time to celebrate and reflect. Please take time with your son/daughter to have conversations with them on what they can improve upon this third nine weeks.
Please ensure you sign and return the signature card/ manila envelope by Tuesday. Students, this is worth 5 sticks.
Congratulations to our CLASSROOM SPELLING BEE winners!!!
Lily and Tom represented our class wonderfully in the school spelling bee on Thursday.
Here are some curriculum highlights as to what I will be teaching in our classroom the next few weeks. Please remember to check the standards link to view Georgia Performance Standards.
Language Arts/Reading:We will continue to work on the strategies for reading and comprehending informational texts. We will also learn and refine the informational writing process.
Math: We have begun to have fun with fractions this week. We will soon learn about the relationship fractions have with decimals. The following standards will also be taught this nine weeks...equivalent fractions, adding/subtracting fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. Please continue to have your child practice his/her multiplication and division facts daily!! Review concepts that we have covered in class on a daily basis. Please review problem solving,3 by 2 multiplication and 3 digit in the dividend division daily. Please utilize FIRST IN MATH!!
Social Studies: We have begun to learn about the events leading to the American Revolution. We will travel back in history as we explore these events and the impact they had on the development of our country. We will be reading and discussing several chapters in the text over the next couple of weeks. You may want to encourage your child to listen to the story of the American Revolution unfold using the online textbook.
Science: We will be investigating and learning about our Solar System this nine weeks. The first topic of study will be Stars and Star patterns followed by Earth/Moon.

December Happenings!!
GREETINGS TO MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND PARENTS!!! In only 1 week, we will be celebrating our much deserved Holiday break! Here is a glance as to what we will be learning and doing next week:

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE REACHED THEIR AR GOAL THIS NINE WEEKS!! The last day for earning their required points is Thursday, Dec. 22nd. Please encourage your child to meet the goal as they practice the comprehension skills we work on in school, increase their vocabulary through text, and establish the habit of reading for pleasure. We will be celebrating this achievement in January with a DESSERT CAFE!! Details will follow after the holiday break.

December Happenings!!
December is in full swing. In only 2 weeks, we will be celebrating our much deserved Holiday break! This month has been full of learning, detailed content and fun activities. Here is a glance as to what we will be learning and doing next week:
English - subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive pronouns,adjectives, adverbs,prepositions and HELPING VERBS...We will also continue with sentence classification.
Writing - How do I summarize? summaries with a response to literature( Silver Packages ), and judgments/opinions
Reading - fictional story elements ,inferences, point of view, summaries ,analyzing characters we will be finishing up our traditional literature packets too!
Science - Light - How does does light reflect and refract?(transparent,translucent,opaque,reflection,concave,convex) SWYK on sound and light on 12-16. Study Guide will be sent home on Monday.
Social Studies - Southern Colonies SWYK on 12-16 and... French and Indian War
Spelling - No Spelling this week... Wordly Wise 7 VOCABULARY
This week,your children will be taking Reading/Language Arts,Math and Science checkpoint summative and formative assessments as required by the county. As we prepare to take these assessments,remember to have conversations with your son/daughter nightly about what GREAT TEST taking strategies look like. We have been taking practice assessments this week with our IRESPOND devices. Formative assessments will be used to gauge instruction and will NOT be used for a grade. Summative assessments will be averaged into subject grades.

Warm Greetings to all my wonderful students and their families!!!
Teaching has been extremely rewarding and exciting this school year with your BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN! I truly LOVE teaching these young inquisitive minds daily. Their THIRST for knowledge never ceases to amaze me! THANK YOU for sharing your children with me!! I hope you have happy children coming home. All the good vibe must be from the great learning and hard work that is going on by these diligent students in room 310.
Parents, we have made a graceful turn from reading only words to applying thinking and ideas to text. Ask your child about how to use their prior knowledge to understand their reading and how vocabulary can enhance their comprehension of text. Please ensure your children are reading over the break. READING IS THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS EVERY DOOR!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR OWN MADELINE!!! HER REFLECTIONS ENTRY OF A MUSICAL COMPOSITION WAS AWARDED FIRST PLACE AT THE TOM MATHIS COUNCIL LAST NIGHT. MADELINE'S COMPOSITION WILL COMPETE IN STATE COMPETION NEXT MONTH!! WE ARE SOOOOO VERY PROUD OF HER TALENT OF COMPOSING "THE SALT AND PEPPER WALTZ"!!!
We had a wonderful THANKSGIVING lunch yesterday!! It was wonderful to see many family members joining us for a meal. A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL of you for modeling the act and spirit of giving!!! Because of your GENEROUS hearts and WELL stocked pantries...Our humble class won the school contest for the MOST food donations!!!
FORD ES collected over 5,000 cans for the Center for Family Resources!!! SPECIAL THANKS to MRS.MONTGOMERY AND MRS. PALMER FOR THEIR HARD WORK IN ORGANIZING THIS AMAZING EVENT!!!
BOYS AND GIRLS...I feel very BLESSED AND FORTUNATE to have each of you as one of my students and for me to be your teacher!!

What an AWESOME week it has been in room 310!! We have been Iresponding like crazy and your children are becoming VERY proficient with this form of an assessment. ( Do you know what an Irespond device is ?...Have a conversation with your son/daughter...I have full faith that they will tell you!! )
Progress Reports will be sent home this FRIDAY for the second nine weeks. If your child receives one please sign and return these forms as soon as possible. We want to ensure that there are no surprises with grades when we have report cards in January.
MOST STUDENTS ARE WELL ON THEIR WAY TO MAKING THEIR AR and 25 BOOK STANDARD GOALS.
STUDENTS WILL NEED TO HAVE 7 MORE STICKERS/GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS ON THEIR CHART BY JANUARY 10,2012. PLEASE HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER AS TO WHERE THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF MEETING THEIR GOAL. WE HAVE MANY STICKERS TO PUT UP ON MONDAY. WARM GREETINGS TO MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES!
I cannot believe it is November already!! The holidays are just around the corner. Boys and girls...until then... we need to STAY FOCUSED, BE DILIGENT AND WORK HARD to be successful this second nine weeks. Our nine weeks ends on December 22. The midway point is November 14. Please remember the HEAT is turned on with new and exciting material.

Here are some highlights for the week ahead!!
PARENTS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO VISIT THE CURRICULUM STANDARDS LINK TO SEE WHAT WE ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING ABOUT!
Reading/Language Arts:We will be responding to literature this 2nd nine weeks. Students will continue to write summaries with emphasis on their personal connections and opinions. We will be investigating and analyzing the different types of traditional literature.(Fables, Tall Tales and Folk Tales) We will also be learning about fictional story elements, analyzing characters and looking at their points of view.
Math: We continue to practice dividing 3 digit dividends by 2 digit divisors. If you could please practice this with your son/daughter it would be most beneficial!! Please review these steps with your son/daughter too! Please remember that practice is the key in math. Problem solving will also be a focus for the remainder of the year. We will be learning some new strategies using model drawings. Geometry is well under way and we will soon become architects creating our very own city of geometrical figures, lines and shapes.
Social Studies: European Exploration to the New World. Spanish, French and the English Explorers...another SWYK on Wednesday,November 9...please ensure that you know the following ...year of exploration, motivation, sponsor, obstacles, and accomplishments of each country and explorer listed on VIP in notebook( USE YOUR MATRIX )
Science: Force and Motion...Newton's Laws
Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts. We are making great progress. EXCELLENT job on the timed tests...We have had many students make it into our "CLUB" ALL students are improving tremendously!!! Many thanks to the parents who have contributed to the candy bar collection!! We are well stocked now!!!
