SENSATIONAL SATURDAY 01-21-2012
Warm Greetings to my wonderful students and parents!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me. Their thirst for knowledge and desire to learn continues to astound me!!!
Buckle your seat belts boys and girls and hold on for some exciting new things to learn. I hope you are ready to put on your THINKING CAP and apply some ELBOW GREASE !

Here are some highlights and events as to what I will be teaching in our classroom the next few weeks:
Language Arts:We will continue to work on the strategies for comprehending informational texts using context clues and cause and effect.
READING TO LEARN INFORMATION!!!
Math: This week we will be learning the relationship decimals have with fractions, equivalent decimals and relate mixed decimals to money.
SWYK TUESDAY!!!...equivalent fractions, comparing fractions,adding/subtracting fractions,converting improper and mixed fractions and word problems with fractions.
Social Studies: We will continue to learn about the events of the American Revolutionary War. SWYK using informational reading on the events leading to the Revolutionary War. ( Stamp Act, Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre and the First Continental Congress )
Science: Stars and Constellations SWYK on Tuesday. Study Guide has been given.
STUDENTS WILL NEED 6 MORE STICKERS ON THEIR CHARTS BY March 16,2012. PLEASE HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER AS TO WHERE THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF MEETING THEIR GOAL FOR THE 25 BOOK STANDARD. I AM HOPING WE WILL HAVE MANY STICKERS TO PUT UP NEXT FRIDAY.
READING IS THE KEY THAT UNLOCK EVERY DOOR...MANY STUDENTS HAVE UNLOCKED THEIR DOOR TO THE LOVE OF READING...PLEASE HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF READING.
Parents, the fourth grade team has taken the time to create and assign CRCT PRACTICE TESTS FOR your child. The purpose of taking these practice tests is to give your child exposure as to how questions will be asked in a multiple choice format. Many strategies have been taught in class. Some examples are...READING THE QUESTIONS AND CHOICES CAREFULLY, SHOWING EVIDENCE, ELIMINATING NONSENSE ANSWERS AND CHECKING OVER YOUR WORK. I would greatly appreciate your support and encouragement with this endeavor. This week, I TAUGHT each student HOW to access and take these CRCT practice tests. Students problem solved many technology issues while taking these tests. YEAH TEAM!!! I will begin assigning practice tests the week of January 29. These tests will be assigned on a SATURDAY and will need to be completed by the following Tuesday.( 9 nights ) I will check these scores online. There is no need to print or email anything. A yellow sheet was glued in each child's agenda today.A sheet with your child's CRCT number and directions on how to access these assigned tests was given at conference time. I have FULL FAITH that each student will do their personal BEST and SUCCEED!!
On Tuesday,February 14 we will be exchanging Valentine cards in class. We will have a snack and a special story that day too. Students may create a Valentine container. Please remember this is an optional activity. If your child decides to bring in Valentine cards and create a container please have them bring them in on February 14...NO SOONER. I will send home a class list in the next few weeks to help you fill out your cards! HAVE FUN! Let me know if you have any questions!
Just a note on out of class events and parties...if your son or daughter has an out of school event or party and they are not inviting all children in the classroom please mail out invitations. Thanking you in advance!!

Fabulous Friday 01-13-2012
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND PARENTS!!
I hope everyone had a restful and an enjoyable break. It was fabulous to see all your beautiful children this week. I know everyone is eager to get going onto the second half of our journey through fourth grade!!
We are pleased to welcome Ms. Katie Scapin to our classroom this semester. Ms. Scapin is a fourth year ECE student from KSU who will be student teaching with us this term. Please download and read her letter.
Report Cards went home today. Parents this is a time to celebrate and reflect. Please take time with your son/daughter to have conversations with them on what they can improve upon this third nine weeks.
Please ensure you sign and return the signature card/ manila envelope by Tuesday. Students, this is worth 5 sticks.
Congratulations to our CLASSROOM SPELLING BEE winners!!!
Lily and Tom represented our class wonderfully in the school spelling bee on Thursday.
Here are some curriculum highlights as to what I will be teaching in our classroom the next few weeks. Please remember to check the standards link to view Georgia Performance Standards.
Language Arts/Reading:We will continue to work on the strategies for reading and comprehending informational texts. We will also learn and refine the informational writing process.
Math: We have begun to have fun with fractions this week. We will soon learn about the relationship fractions have with decimals. The following standards will also be taught this nine weeks...equivalent fractions, adding/subtracting fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. Please continue to have your child practice his/her multiplication and division facts daily!! Review concepts that we have covered in class on a daily basis. Please review problem solving,3 by 2 multiplication and 3 digit in the dividend division daily. Please utilize FIRST IN MATH!!
Social Studies: We have begun to learn about the events leading to the American Revolution. We will travel back in history as we explore these events and the impact they had on the development of our country. We will be reading and discussing several chapters in the text over the next couple of weeks. You may want to encourage your child to listen to the story of the American Revolution unfold using the online textbook.
Science: We will be investigating and learning about our Solar System this nine weeks. The first topic of study will be Stars and Star patterns followed by Earth/Moon.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING STUDENTS WHO MET THEIR AR GOAL THIS NINE WEEKS...WE WILL BE CELEBRATING WITH A DESSERT CAFE IN JANUARY!!
Lily, Katie,Megan, Pat, JF, Taylor Rae, Oscar,Blake, Abby, Andy, Kate, Josh, Rachel, Madeline, Daniel, Jonathan, Amara, and Ellie...Remember there are two more quarters to earn an invitation to an AR celebration!!! MEET YOUR GOAL WITH AN 85% AVERAGE... and the invitation is yours!!!
My dear students and parents...I want to extend another heartfelt thank you to ALL YOU!!! Your kind words sent in holiday cards,letters and generous gifts mean more than words can express!!! I look forward to sharing these treasures with my family!! Once again, thank you for your genuine kindness and love!!

December Happenings!!
GREETINGS TO MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND PARENTS!!! In only 1 week, we will be celebrating our much deserved Holiday break! Here is a glance as to what we will be learning and doing next week:
Math - City Planners - We will be applying our knowledge of geometry to this activity.
English - subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive pronouns,adjectives, adverbs,prepositions and HELPING VERBS...We will also continue with sentence classification.
Writing - How do I summarize? summaries with a response to literature( Silver Packages ), and judgments/opinions
Reading - fictional story elements ,inferences, point of view, summaries and analyzing characters
Science - OPEN BOOK SWYK on Light and Sound TUESDAY
Social Studies - French and Indian War
Spelling - No Spelling this week...
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE REACHED THEIR AR GOAL THIS NINE WEEKS!! The last day for earning their required points is Thursday, Dec. 22nd. Please encourage your child to meet the goal as they practice the comprehension skills we work on in school, increase their vocabulary through text, and establish the habit of reading for pleasure. We will be celebrating this achievement in January with a DESSERT CAFE!! Details will follow after the holiday break.
- Monday...class pizza party to celebrate winning the canned food drive!!
- Tuesday we will be joining our 2nd grade book buddies for an activity!! .
- Class SOIREE Thursday 9:00ish...( contact Tracey or Beth if you can HELP!! )
- If you have NOT sent in a WRAPPED chapter book with your son/daughter for our class gift exchange...PLEASE DO SO!!!

FABULOUS FRIDAY 12-09-2011
December Happenings!!
December is in full swing. In only 2 weeks, we will be celebrating our much deserved Holiday break! This month has been full of learning, detailed content and fun activities. Here is a glance as to what we will be learning and doing next week:
Math - City Planners activity with geometry,problem solving and 2nd nine weeks review. Please continue to review and practice 2nd nine weeks material. Your child's INB is a great resource and tool to assist them in this. Please review division and multiplication with two and three digits. We need to keep both these skills polished and sharp !
FIRST in MATH is an excellent tool to use. Boys and girls please go on the K&S problem solving section during the holiday break. I know it will be busy but, please make time amidst the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations.

Spelling - No Spelling this week... Wordly Wise 7 VOCABULARY
This week,your children will be taking Reading/Language Arts,Math and Science checkpoint summative and formative assessments as required by the county. As we prepare to take these assessments,remember to have conversations with your son/daughter nightly about what GREAT TEST taking strategies look like. We have been taking practice assessments this week with our IRESPOND devices. Formative assessments will be used to gauge instruction and will NOT be used for a grade. Summative assessments will be averaged into subject grades.

THANKFUL THURSDAY 11-17-2011
Warm Greetings to all my wonderful students and their families!!!
Teaching has been extremely rewarding and exciting this school year with your BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN! I truly LOVE teaching these young inquisitive minds daily. Their THIRST for knowledge never ceases to amaze me! THANK YOU for sharing your children with me!! I hope you have happy children coming home. All the good vibe must be from the great learning and hard work that is going on by these diligent students in room 310.
Parents, we have made a graceful turn from reading only words to applying thinking and ideas to text. Ask your child about how to use their prior knowledge to understand their reading and how vocabulary can enhance their comprehension of text. Please ensure your children are reading over the break. READING IS THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS EVERY DOOR!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR OWN MADELINE!!! HER REFLECTIONS ENTRY OF A MUSICAL COMPOSITION WAS AWARDED FIRST PLACE AT THE TOM MATHIS COUNCIL LAST NIGHT. MADELINE'S COMPOSITION WILL COMPETE IN STATE COMPETION NEXT MONTH!! WE ARE SOOOOO VERY PROUD OF HER TALENT OF COMPOSING "THE SALT AND PEPPER WALTZ"!!!
We had a wonderful THANKSGIVING lunch yesterday!! It was wonderful to see many family members joining us for a meal. A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL of you for modeling the act and spirit of giving!!! Because of your GENEROUS hearts and WELL stocked pantries...Our humble class won the school contest for the MOST food donations!!!
FORD ES collected over 5,000 cans for the Center for Family Resources!!! SPECIAL THANKS to MRS.MONTGOMERY AND MRS. PALMER FOR THEIR HARD WORK IN ORGANIZING THIS AMAZING EVENT!!!
BOYS AND GIRLS...I feel very BLESSED AND FORTUNATE to have each of you as one of my students and for me to be your teacher!!
YOU ARE ALL AWESOME AND WONDERFULLY MADE!!
I am extremely THANKFUL for each one of YOU and the UNIQUE TRAITS you bring to our class!!!

GLORIOUS SATURDAY 11-05-2011
WARM GREETINGS TO MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES!
I cannot believe it is November already!! The holidays are just around the corner. Boys and girls...until then... we need to STAY FOCUSED, BE DILIGENT AND WORK HARD to be successful this second nine weeks. Our nine weeks ends on December 22. The midway point is November 14. Please remember the HEAT is turned on with new and exciting material.

PARENTS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO VISIT THE CURRICULUM STANDARDS LINK TO SEE WHAT WE ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING ABOUT!
Reading/Language Arts:We will be responding to literature this 2nd nine weeks. Students will continue to write summaries with emphasis on their personal connections and opinions. We will be investigating and analyzing the different types of traditional literature.(Fables, Tall Tales and Folk Tales) We will also be learning about fictional story elements, analyzing characters and looking at their points of view.
Math: We continue to practice dividing 3 digit dividends by 2 digit divisors. If you could please practice this with your son/daughter it would be most beneficial!! Please review these steps with your son/daughter too! Please remember that practice is the key in math. Problem solving will also be a focus for the remainder of the year. We will be learning some new strategies using model drawings. Geometry is well under way and we will soon become architects creating our very own city of geometrical figures, lines and shapes.
Social Studies: European Exploration to the New World. Spanish, French and the English Explorers...another SWYK on Wednesday,November 9...please ensure that you know the following ...year of exploration, motivation, sponsor, obstacles, and accomplishments of each country and explorer listed on VIP in notebook( USE YOUR MATRIX )
Science: Force and Motion...Newton's Laws
Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts. We are making great progress. EXCELLENT job on the timed tests...We have had many students make it into our "CLUB" ALL students are improving tremendously!!! Many thanks to the parents who have contributed to the candy bar collection!! We are well stocked now!!!

WARM GREETINGS TO ALL MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS AND PARENTS!!
Thank you for the wonderful emails and delightful conversations I had with all of you during conference week. I am BLESSED beyond words to have such a wonderful group of supportive parents!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN WITH ME!! THEY ARE ALL AWESOME AND WONDERFULLY MADE!
Parents, we will continue to dig deep into many new and exciting units of study this second nine weeks.
Let us TURN UP THE HEAT this nine weeks!!!
Please be mindful that content for the remainder of the year will be new, detailed and extensive. Please set up a review/study system with your son/daughter. Review content material nightly with your child. Have daily conversations with your child about what they have learned. Parents review standards so that you are aware of what is being taught and learned. Students will be expected to show what they know weekly in various subject areas.
I HAVE FULL FAITH IN EACH STUDENT THAT THEY WILL BE SUCCESSFUL FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR WITH THIS PROCEDURE IN PLACE! PARENTS, REMEMBER WE ARE IN COMPLETE PARTNERSHIP WITH EACH OTHER! All lines of communication need to be open and clear for this to be an AWESOME YEAR for your child! FIRST IN MATH - One of our school-wide goals at Ford is to increase student math computation skills. First in Math is a great program that helps students practice those skills. Please encourage your children to spend time on First in Math every week (link is on the math page).
Here's a glance of what we have ahead...Parents remember to check the standards link on the side for THE GEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS that will be taught this year.

PARENTS... PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO BE READING 30 MINUTES NIGHTLY. PLEASE CHECK THE FORD WEBSITE FOR AR BOOKS AVAILABLE IN THE MEDIA CENTER. One AR book and one non AR book is what I encourage the children to check out! Something that they will be SUCCESSFUL at!!
Please also remember that 25 books/equivalent need to be read and documented by the end of this school year. REMEMBER THIS IS A STATE READING STANDARD
REMEMBER...All students MUST have at least 7 graphic organizers/stickers completed by January 10...I have FULL FAITH that this requirement will be met by ALL students!
Students who choose not to read and document by way of graphic organizer, will have the following consequences:
- On Mustang Madness Fridays a choice will be made by me to complete organizers!! Students will go to the Library to read and document in the form of a graphic organizer.
- Each completed graphic organizer is the equivalent to a test grade.
Your children, here at FORD have been learning about Rachel's Challenge and the impact ONE person had on our country.
